Odd matrimonial laws in USA

These days we can observe a lot of odd marriages around the world: whether you want to marry your cat, a robot, or a toy, it now seems possible.

And although we might not observe the same tendency in the States, we still have a few strange marital laws, and you can observe some of them in this article!

Examples of Strange Legislations

Any country or even state has its own weird laws that were created as a precedent or simply as a precaution in earlier days. Some of such laws could be observed below:

  • In the state of Vermont, a law demands a husband’s approval for a wife’s decision to put on false teeth. Apparently, there was a case when a husband did not want to pay for the bill afterward, which is why this law was created. This law still exists, but of course, it is not enforced anymore.
  • The state of Massachusetts has its own portion of odd matrimonial laws. For instance, in previous times, men could not marry a woman until they proved themselves to be manly, i.e., shoot either six blackbirds or three cows. In addition, Salem legislation did not allow husbands and wives to lay naked in a rented room.
  • Another strange legislation takes place in South Carolina, where a man older than 16 does not have a right to seduce a woman with a false promise of marriage afterward. Breaking this law will leave a man either in jail for up to one year or with a fine determined by the court.
  • Both states of Colorado and Delaware have a law that makes a marriage made on a dare to be a decent enough reason for receiving an annulment. In other states, there is also a case law for such situations.
  • There are also specific laws for people marrying those who serve overseas. Thus, most states allow going through a proxy marriage with only one witness. However, this is not the case for Montana. In this state, you might get married without any witnesses at all.
  • In addition, those of you who plan on having a domestic partnership should avoid living in Mississippi or Michigan. It is still prohibited in these states to cohabitate without being married to each other. And although there are more and more cases winning over this law, you might save yourself some trouble by living in another state.
  • The whole country also has a bit of a contradictional opinion regarding marriages between cousins: 30 states forbid cohabitation and marriage between first cousins, while five other states allow such marriages, but only if both spouses are older than 50 years.
